Types of Diabetes

There are three types of diabetes:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
  2. Type 2 Diabetes
  3. Gestational Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes – In this type, the body attacks its pancreas, thereby destroying the beta cells responsible for the manufacturing of insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes –body develops insulin resistance. Eventually, insulin production decreases, and this leads to a high sugar level in the blood.

Gestational Diabetes – during pregnancy, many women develop gestational diabetes.

Incidence of Diabetes in America

According to reports published in 2017, Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States of America. According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2018, 34.2 million Americans had Diabetes. Among these, 1.6 million had type 1 diabetes. Only 26.8 million were diagnosed, while 7.3 million remained undiagnosed. 26.8% of people are old (>60 years). Every year one and half million people are diagnosed with diabetes. Ethnicity-wise, Asian Americans have an incidence rate of 14.7% (the highest incidence rate). In 2017, diabetes took the life of 270,702 people.

The most common diabetes in the USA is type 2 Diabetes. Up to 95% of people have type 2 diabetes in the USA.

Why is Diabetes Common?

A study found done in 2008 & 2009 by the CDC and National Institutes of Health, more than 18,000 people developed type 1 diabetes when they were younger than 20 years. More than five thousand developed type 2 diabetes.

The reason given was obesity, in-utero exposure to diabetes, and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as DDT and lead. These factors are the reason behind diabetes being common in American households, and it has drastic effects on American family fitness. The children of American households suffer the worst.

Prediabetes

Many children are also in the prediabetic stage. Most parents ignore the signs of obesity in children. A thickening of the nape is usually a sign of prediabetes. Children that are overweight resume their unhealthy diet, and then a time comes when they start to urinate a lot and lose weight. They think it is a good thing, but they have usually developed diabetes. In America, 1 out of 3 children is obese. Inexpensive and tasty junk food is usually the reason behind obesity.

Conclusion

It is now prudent that we eradicate diabetes from the nation. Many things can be done to achieve that. The unavailability of healthy food has become a big problem that should be solved by introducing healthy food options in the high school cafeteria. Balancing out the food cycle will also help in overcoming the disease.
