Rose of Jericho has as many names as the benefits. Rose of Jericho plant is known for its resilience and resurrection abilities. Rose of Jericho has many health benefits, and it is also popular in some religions. It is said that this plant is responsible for good feelings and vibes in people and the house. True Rose of Jericho

The true Rose of Jericho is Anastatica hierochuntica. The plant can be found in Western Asia. The beauty of this plant is that it can survive extremely dry spells. It turns into itself and makes a ball. That way, it can survive the heat. In the presence of moisture, the plant returns to its original state. It is sometimes termed tumbleweed because it gets uprooted and gets blown away by the wind. In case of uprooting, it cannot revive in the presence of moisture.  The plant can grow as wide as 30cm. It bears small white flowers.

False Rose of Jericho

Selaginella lepidophylla is the false Rose of Jericho. This plant can be found in Chihuahuan Dessert in Mexico. This plant is a member of the moss family. All the features of the true Rose of Jericho and false Rose of Jericho are the same, except the false Rose of Jericho can regain its original form even after uprooting and becoming the tumbleweed.

Beneficial Uses of Rose of Jericho

There are many uses of this plant. Due to this reason, it is found in many traditional medical treatments. Most of the time, the plant leaves are used to make teas, and then that tea is consumed for treatment purposes. Some of the uses of the plant are in the treatment of:

Labor Induction

Rose of Jericho plant is mostly famous for its role in labor induction. It works as an emmenagogue (it is a chemical that increases the menstrual flow). A study was done on 460 women in Malaysia. Among them, 66% used Rose of Jericho during pregnancy. The risk and benefits of Rose of Jericho during pregnancy are unknown. It is best not to use Rose of Jericho during pregnancy till further studies are done.

Chlorogenic Acid

it is interesting to note that despite the prefix ‘chloro’, the acid does not contain any chlorine. But the word chloro means light green. There are many medicinal effects of chlorogenic acid. It has properties such as:

  • Anti-pyretic
  • Anti-obesity
  • Hepatoprotective
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Cardioprotective
  • Anti-hypertension
  • Antiviral
  • Antimicrobial

All these properties make chlorogenic acid the perfect dietary supplement. This decreases the blood pressure slightly. It has also shown beneficial effects in cataracts and wound-healing.


It is a plant flavonol. Quercetin has antioxidant properties that help lower blood pressure and inflammation. It has also shown many benefits for allergic reactions and asthma. There are free radicals in the body that causes damage to the cells. The antioxidants bind to these free radicals, thereby taking care of these unstable molecules. Otherwise, these molecules may cause cancer and heart diseases. Quercetin also has been shown to boost immunity. Quercetin shown effects at 500mg, but the Rose of Jericho only contains 50mg of quercetin, so this amount might not be good for the full effect of quercetin.


Kaempferol is also a flavonol same as quercetin. It is an antioxidant. It has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer in many studies. This chemical was isolated in 1930. Kaempferol also has anti-inflammatory properties.


Like quercetin and kaempferol, luteolin is also a flavonol. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It also helps in memory enhancement, according to some reports.

It should be noted that even though Rose of Jericho has all of these useful chemicals present in them, there are no concrete studies that show that it is a cure for any disease, least of all cancer.

How to Use Rose of Jericho?

While most of the time, the leaves of the plants make a tea that fights many diseases and keeps the person healthy. Also, botanical oil of rose of Jericho plant is available. It is available in capsule form. Many companies and shops sell oil that is made of the false Rose of Jericho. You should read the label before buying any oil.

It’s better to remain safe than sorry. Do not use Rose of Jericho as the ultimate cure. If you are already taking medicine for your ailment, ask the professional before adding Rose of Jericho to your diet. If you want to take Rose of Jericho for labor induction, tell your physician beforehand. There are no studies that show that Rose of Jericho helps in labor induction, so make sure you are aware of that before taking the plant in your diet.
